If you’ve ever watched Mamma Mia – the movie version I mean – you may recall the beautiful, vintage lace wedding dress that Amanda Seyfried’s character dons as Meryl Streep sings “Slipping Through My Fingers” and reduces me to the state of an inconsolable, weeping baby.
That dress has been my dream since then (2008 seems like an awfully long time ago now…), but the issue with wedding dresses is that they only get worn by the same person once. Theoretically. And as much as I want to, it’s not exactly publicly accepted to wear a wedding dress as casual day-wear, no matter how much like a princess you deserve to be. So on one of my recent vintage hauls, I was overjoyed (that doesn’t even begin to cut it…the whole experience of trying on this dress was surreal, like one of those cheesy Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants moments where it fits perfectly) to find this dress in none other than Mama Loves You on Queen West. Unlike Seyfried’s dress, it was a little more casual, more suitable for everyday wear; like Seyfried’s though, it had its own vintage lace.
And realistically, that’s all that mattered.
So as much as I’d like to walk the streets barefoot just like they do on the way to the little church on the hill in Mamma Mia, I’ll settle for simple sandals that can hardly be seen, thanks to the length of the dress. This piece never fails to make me feel like an island queen, and goes particularly well with moonlight and good company.
